Drake's Bay is considered by many to be the place that enjoys all the best of what Costa Rica has to offer. Flocks of wild macaws swoop through the village, monkeys visit daily on the outskirts of the surrounding primary forest, and the crystal blue ocean bring dolphin and humpback whales just offshore.
Discovered by Sir Francis Drake in 1579, the area around Drake's Bay has remained relatively untouched due to its remote location on the north side of the wild Osa Penninsula. It is also home to the crown jewel of Costa Rica's National Park system, Corcovado, which has been called by National Geographic "as one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet."
Professional divers and sportfisherman have been coming to Drake's Bay for years due to the waters teeming with fish drawn by another National Park found just seven miles from shore, Cano Island National park, an ancient pre-Colombian burial ground and alleged home to loads of treasure hidden by pirates that used Drake's as a hideout.
Birdwatchers call it "paradise" due to the enormous variety of species found here. Just sitting on the veranda of the house you may have the opportunity to see hummingbirds, parrots, toucans, as well many other exotic species, and of course the playful Scarlet Macaws.
